Beatitude 1
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(Matthew 5:3)
From His kingdom Christ extends the hand of invitation to
the poor who are rising and reaching to meet Him. At the bottom, amid briars and thistles,
the symbol of sin and worldly interests stands the rich man in costly raiment which
reflect his vanity. He is the symbol of an indifferent and important sinner. Yet this man
or his alter-ego, with the hyssop, the symbol of humility between his folded hands, gazes
beseeching upward, showing even to this man comes the promise of redemption with his
regeneration.
