Beatitude 2
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
(Matthew 5:4)
The hand of blessing descends upon a mourner. Arms outstretched, she gradually emerges from a state of despair and fear (the figure at the bottom) to seek solace in God. Symbols of death surround the feet of the upper figure. i.e. torches inverted, the willow (mourning and grief), the sickle.
