Beatitude 3
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
(Matthew 5:5)
Two figures rejoice in their heavenly reward. Below them and around the lower
figure flows a stole signifying the meek and humility of Christ, who assumed the burden of
omission. Over the earth, the scene of trials and also the reward of the meek, hovers a
dove, used here as the symbol of humility. At the bottom is the yoke, the symbol of
meekness and patient service. It reminds us also that Christ bore our sins, a supreme
example of meekness. Below the yoke is a rudder, which exemplifies self-restraint and
self-control.
